Belly Dance Article in Ebony

Hello all,

I don't know if anyone posted this already, but a co-worker of mine who knows that I take lessons photocopied this article for me from this month's (August) Ebony magazine. It was for the fitness section, and features a picture of Djalaal out of Chicago giving information about the dance and some of the basic steps are outlined.

Even though it was a short article (well, about a 2 page spread), the author actually took the time to say that this dance was not just something you see Shakira and Beyonce doing for a video, but it requires a certain skill level, and technique. 'Cause you know I saw a couple of weeks ago on another tribe's post that Cosmo did a short piece (a few paragraphs) on belly dance for fitness and stated that there is no real skill involved and something like all you have to know how to do is move your waist. Well that got a whole letter writing thing started (which I'm glad it did).

I tried to find the article on the web site, but haven't seen it.

I was pretty excited:) Especially to see one of "us" up there in a major magazine for people of color. I've never come across that before. Are there other articles that I've missed? Point them to me!:)

Just wondering if anyone else saw it/read it and what they thought.

  • Wow... gotta go see if I can locate that one. Sounds like a good piece to share with my students.

    Thanks for sharing!!

I thought the article was OKAY...it kind of left me wanting more. I felt like the pictures were not that good--I would have liked to have seen more photos--and I would have liked to see a few more dancers profiled.

But having said that, I give props to Ebony for even covering bellydance. I feel like the magazine is really improving and covering a lot more subject matter under the new editors.
      • Yeah, I see what your saying. I too would like to have seen a little more meat. But it's a good start. Maybe it can be a catalyst for more?
        • Yes I agree that the article was nice , but it was so lacking in depth. There was no mention of the thousands of Black dancers around the world or the wonderful resources availiable to people who want to start this dance. I was so disappointed---but this means that we should write to the mag and let them know about us.
In my letter I will mention Nakish as well as Yasmeen Samra who had the "Belly Dancer" magazine as well as this tribe.
