Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. Note that this was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation - which had become official January 1, 1863. The Emancipation Proclamation had little impact on the Texans due to the minimal number of Union troops to enforce the new Executive order. However, with the surrender of General Lee in April of 1865, and the arrival of General Granger’s regiment, the forces were finally strong enough to influence and overcome the resistance.

Share this information with someone tomorrow.

We don't have an August show, so for the July hafla I need to have the September flyers out on the table- if there's anyway I could fill this spot by June 5 it would really help!
Here's our website: www.allseasonshafla.com There is an application page there.
After a recent show where all our dancers were about the same color, a rather pale color like me, I thought I better start posting for dancers some new places! I would like the audience to see all kinds of dancers. This is a hafla of, by and for the bellydance community- first time performers are welcome, and long time performers often dance to 'give back'. I especially like it when teachers send their students who are not quite ready for prime time- performing in front of an audience is how you Get Ready.

So far we have performing in September:
Carey
Trillian
Noura
Atef Hassan and Hany (hey, at least we have guys!)
Nina Amaya, Towson, MD
Banat al-Beled
Latifa

July's show will be awesome- we have a live band!!
Shems, Baltimore, MD
Naimah, Baltimore, MD
Berna of Khafif, Pittsburgh, PA
Rom Deussen, St. George,Utah
Zarifa, Gaithersburg, MD
Basema, Gelsomina and Janaiya
Kaoru and Kimberly, B’more, MD
Nina Amaya, Towson, MD
Belly Dance Delight, B’more, MD

Please consider coming- absolutely delicious Indian food buffet!

Hi everyone, I posted this just now, and I'm curious to hear your feedback. I'm searching for guidance, clarification, good conversation, etc. This is a hot topic in a few of the tribes, especially the ones dealing with origins of "Bellydance"

Re: The Ethics of FusionToday, 9:18 PM
I am a newbie to bellydance (2 years) and I am just starting my research, but here's what I've picked up so far. Please clarify things for me if they are incorrect, b/c this is all about learning for me:)
Here's the thing:

<"But we're talking about the exchange of dance culture and not the expansion of one racial dominance over another. Unless there was a hostile belly dancer coup that I was not made aware of...">

whomever tells the story-that's the story that's told...

1.Where did our costume come from? Europeans who had been to India wanted to see Middle Eastern female dancers look like the Indian women with their midriff exposed.
2.Didn't more men "bellydance" as well?- a social culture; a social dance. Not after Europeans came. they wanted to see the women ---Objectified---it became money talks-
3. Isn't Egypt part of North East Africa? Isn't "Bellydance" a North African tradition as well as a Middle Eastern tradition since at one point in time Egypt extended into what we now call the Middle East? Why is it that it's only "Africa" if it's sub-Saharan?

<"But here's an interesting question... if race were the issue then who would be at fault for the spread of belly dance into other cultural dance forms? "...>

These movements are as old as time...in every culture; in every race. To take that statement one step further, and I don't even know if I should put this out there but here goes...LIFE originated in Africa/Egypt, so in terms of the dance and culture, maybe some have just not got in touch with it yet. Maybe some dancers are re-connecting with it in a way that compliments the culture (their culture) that developed later?

As a dancer coming up in this time, I understand and agree with teachers/dancers saying
learn the dance as it was and in the purest form that there is for your respective style. My teacher has been dancing for 30 years and newer dancers can't touch the amount of knowledge and expertise most of our experienced dancers/teachers have. I believe we should really develop those skills and keep that at the forefront of our training/teaching/performing.

Having said that...

But also, as a young dancer who has studied another dance style and come from a backround of Caribbean and American culture, I see the opportunity to share myself as That woman(Caribbean-American Bellydancer), sharing my comfort and freedom in being proud/comfortable with myself and my femininity. Is this not what the dance was meant to portray from the beginning? And that makes the dance come full circle for me. The next question would then be: what about establishing proper venues for each? Like spring caravan does? Or in NYC one teacher I know of puts on themed show (i.e. Rock and Roll show, Middle Eastern Jazz) once a month.

There is always going to be culture exchange, especially in this time when we have access to everything on demand. Look at food- top chefs constantly push the envelope for taking tradition and making it new and different. One thing that I think we dancers forget is that they learn the correct and proper way to execute the traditional first, before being able to take elements from each and create something new. ThenI guess the next dilemma is what to call it. Does the word Fusion suffice as a catch-all?

My $.02

I need your help. My daugher is getting married March '08 and I was thinking to dance in her wedding. The question we have is how to incorporate it in the wedding for us since it's not our cultural, meaning how can we introduce it to the guest.

I personally have not danced at a wedding yet, so this would be my first. My plan is to do a dance with my cape veil (Chiffon Wings basically) and then a drum solo for an upbeat perfomance and bring my daughter up to center stage with me and maybe her husband as well etc.

Any suggestion on how to work it. (smile),

Thanking you in advance.

I love watching performances of various styles (I love watching old egyptian, turkish, etc. movies which have bellydancing scenes in them sometimes for inspiration). However I RARELY see clips of black women bellydancing. I know we are out there!!! So far I've seen 2 clips from this tribe.

I'm trying to figure out exactly where thes people are : "from"...the description says its a story about black film students in a bedouin village. for some reason I'm thinking they are in egypt. there is really interesting insight into the descrimination that totally mirrors american history's...its really sad to see the struggle that they have, I also find it interesting that they keep referring to arabs as whites. these peole are descendants only a generation or two removed from the sudan, I believe, and are grandchildren of people that were kidnapped as kids and sold as slaves...its a place called rahat...maybeit is an arab part of israel...anyhow, this is a fscinating & deep documentary.
look for it, it says it should be coming on a few more times.

Hi Everyone!

Anna and I have in the works Tribal Night 6. The High Five Bar (5th & High Cols., OH...the same establishment that has hosted all previous TNs) has asked Raks Jahanni to organize another one just like the last one. Then I thought “just like the last one”? What made the last one so special??? Then it hit me…I think it was the dancers that stayed after the show they remember the most. Good times…

Anyway, Anna and I said “sure, why not?”, and the bar says “ok, you have October 20”. Moments later we secured a more than eager local band who heard the words belly and dancers and agreed to play after the show and beat their chests. I think the newly single drummer was the one that spoke up first. They’re not the usual type of band you would see at a belly dancing event, but then again Anna and I aren’t “usual” either. The band rocks my socks off and that’s all that matters.

So here’s the thing…we can’t have a Tribal Night if we don’t have any dancers that want to perform, right? We would like as many people to get back to us within A DAY to tell us if they would like to perform or we won’t have it…seriously! Again, the date is Oct. 20 (a Saturday), and everyone is welcome. You best believe this will be a Halloween themed dance night…we can’t let slide by the one time of year when Anna feels normal, can we??? Feel free to come whacked out in your most disturbing ensemble. Our special friends in dance (Zimra, Chandara Gamal (and troupe), Kira LaFave, Yasmilah, Zahira, Sacred Shimmy, Rachyl, Gypsy Soul, Laylia, Khalida Tribe, Crescent Moon) who have supported us in the past are always welcome to perform. Hit me back if you’re down….

Peace
~Janaan

I don't know if anyone posted this already, but a co-worker of mine who knows that I take lessons photocopied this article for me from this month's (August) Ebony magazine. It was for the fitness section, and features a picture of Djalaal out of Chicago giving information about the dance and some of the basic steps are outlined.

Even though it was a short article (well, about a 2 page spread), the author actually took the time to say that this dance was not just something you see Shakira and Beyonce doing for a video, but it requires a certain skill level, and technique. 'Cause you know I saw a couple of weeks ago on another tribe's post that Cosmo did a short piece (a few paragraphs) on belly dance for fitness and stated that there is no real skill involved and something like all you have to know how to do is move your waist. Well that got a whole letter writing thing started (which I'm glad it did).

I tried to find the article on the web site, but haven't seen it.

I was pretty excited:) Especially to see one of "us" up there in a major magazine for people of color. I've never come across that before. Are there other articles that I've missed? Point them to me!:)

Just wondering if anyone else saw it/read it and what they thought.
To all my Tribe members and others.;
I want to reach out to everyone who received my first e-mail letter and express my deep apology for the typographical errors.

Available time for me has been limited. It has interfered with my quiet
sit down moments to send off another letter.

I work for a National & International Theatrical local that covers the entire musical spectrum such as Broadway shows, Opera, Ballet, Symphony, Movies, and Industrial Shows, dance companies & all other music events. At times, it keeps me on the move.

I also build for a Designer who designs for smaller theater companies in the San Francisco Bay Area.

An email address has been set up under ladywiththeeyes@yahoo.com
For those who want to contact me. But be aware; don’t expect me to correspond immediately.

I want every dancer to keep a journal each time a club owner discriminates against you for the following reasons:
1) Race
2) Size

Here is a list of things I want everyone to write down:
1)	Club name
2)	Club address
3)	Owner name
4)	Date
5)	Time
6)	The full conversation and any witnesses name, phone number you can get.
2008 Intensive workshop in the making;
July 2008

If I get the total response needed, I will give a four day intensive
Work shop and dinner show. There will be surprise teachers plus myself with certificates.
The work shop will be limited. No walk ins. This is the only fair way a certificate can be issued.

I clearly want to express again, that the four days can only happen with total response. If not, a smaller workshop will take place.

Your email response will help a great deal. I’ll need your contact information
So I can update you , or put you on first mail priority, because it will be limited.

Hey All,

In the past two months, I've heard disparaging comments towards hip hop dance from well known dancers, dancers in my area and dancer posts on tribe. Most of them frame hip hop dance as highly sexual, as lacking moral boundaries and as degrading towards women. However, I've noticed that most of these people (ok, all of them :) are Caucasian. They seem to do it in order to say 'well, people might see bellydance's bedlah as sexual but at least we're not as sexual as all that booty-shaking in hip hop dance.' or to say 'why will parents send their kids to hip hop over bellydance considering how overtly sexual hip hop is.' One poster did call hip hop all that 'booty-shaking.' But, hello, the three-quarter shimmy is all about 'booty-shaking.' When I've pressed the people I know to name hip hop videos where they've seen overtly sexual dancing (or any at all) they usually come up blank and I have to point out that Eve, Usher, Queen Latifa, Lil Mama, Black-Eyed Peas, etc. all belong to the hip hop genre, and the videos they produce are far from derogatory. In fact, I always try to emphasize that hip hop dance is an art form, and just like bellydance it can be misappropriated. I'll also point out that the videos they hear about are from male hip hop artists whose videos only appear 'after hours' and are mainly created to titillate or for sensational purposes. However, it upsets me that dancers who speak out against society's denigrating construction of bellydance as overtly sexual, have to put down another dance form to make themselves seem 'normal' and 'better'. It also concerns me as it covertly reminds me of 19th century mindsets that frame the movements of certain cultures as salacious, rather than looking at who is using them. Has anyone else come across this?

Last winter, an idea was brought up to create a calendar featuring our big, beautiful, belly-dancer (BBBD) sisters and there was such a huge, positive response that this idea has become a reality!

The creative mindset behind this idea, BBBD Meghan, asked BBBD Kamala Devi to chair this project, and with the help of some very motivated BBBD sisters, we are pleased to announce that we are now accepting applications from other BBBD sisters for the BBBD 2008 Calendar!
Please read all the information carefully and follow the instructions. If you have any questions, please send a Tribe PM to Calendar chairperson Kamala Devi.

The deadline for your application is July 31, 2007.

We are all looking forward to this project and are eager to see how the calendar turns out. We hope that this is successful enough to become an annual calendar.

Thanks everyone!

Hi all, just want to say it was worth the expense and preparation to attend the BOCA fest. It was more than I expected. I will start off with saying how convenient it was to get to and from the airport to the location of the festival which was the Inn & Conference Center etc. The hotel was a very very good choice for the festival and I hope they continue to have it there, the auditorium was a good size and the atmosphere was great. The vendors were great and they were proud to be there and served us well. They were very friendly and organized.

Ok, now on with the show. Love it, Loved it, Loved it. Saturday performances were great with variety and different acts. The Sunday student showcase was no amature show, although amature is good we were all one at one time (Smile). However, the show was super, from costumes to talent. I was sooooooooo proud to see so many of us attending and especially performing. The show had a lot going on and a lot of different dances, I must say we are such talented and creative people. I missed a few acts because I was back stage getting myself together (Smile) but saw quite a bit.

D'Zyre you looked adorable and can play those zills and dance, I loved it, Abiola and troupe, I loved the drum solo performance and dresses they were hot, Meghan you did it, loved the tribal fusion, Yanna I saw a little bit of your troupe back stage but missed a lot of it. All I can say is my family kept talking about the troupe and the challenge performance, cant wait to see the tape. I do know yall looked hot as we all got dressed in the same place and I loved what everyone was wearing. the California girls were adorable and I loved their ending. Everybody was soooooooo good as I cant remember all the names I wish there was a program for the show. The workshops were fantastic and I learned aot.

All I can say is my 26 yr old daughter has been to many of my shows in Orlando and she kept saying that was the best show she ever saw me in, she loved, loved, loved the Student showcase show on Sunday.

I was a little surpirsed I didnt see Dr. Sunyatta Saturday or Sunday make any announement or introduction of BOCA since she is the founder, I would have loved to have seen her, she's so beautiful.and I'm proud of her vision etc. On the other hand I was in Maryland and people do things different in other places. Loved it!

Sorry for cross posting. I’m posting this on the suggestion of a friend who emailed after reading this from my blog. This one is a bit long, but I think the suggestions are valid and important.

When dancers are given an opportunity to perform at a local show or hafla, every effort should be made to make their experience a positive one. Why? Dancers are often dancing for free. In fact, it’s likely that they are paying to attend the event to dance. Many do it for the experience. Some because of it just fun to perform. It doesn't matter why, all the dancers deserve to have a positive evening.

So it’s critical for the person(s) hosting these events (soloist, troupe, or venue owner) to treat the dancers with an abundance of respect, hospitality and appreciation. Otherwise, it is exploitive to get something for nothing. In this case, your getting talent for a show in exchange for being treated professionally. Regardless if its a beginner’s first performance or seasoned dancers of 20 years, the expectation is to have fun and to be treated with care.

I’m disturbed when dancers are not treated well at events. It’s particularly reprehesable when it’s another dancer or troupe that are clueless on common courtesy and good manners.

I’ve witnessed inhospitable situations at an event. I’ve seen host become so self-absorbed in getting ready for their performance, they ignore their guests dancers. I’m appalled that even the smallest considerations for the dancers are not present. I’ve seen dancers herded together in tight quarters and left to fend for themselves. I’ve seen dancers unaware of the performance lineup (sometimes due to last minute changes) and left guessing when the show starts and who’s up next. The final insult is when the host is blasé about saying thank you and goodbye.

A general announcement afterwards or a quickie "thanks" while handing back a dancers music isn't enough to let that dancer know you're thankful for their time and talents in lue of pay.

I’ve danced in some high level events with staging and lighting. I’ve danced at haflas at restaurants. I’ve danced at lodges and churches. It doesn’t matter the size of the venue or the number of dancers performing. The host has a responsibility to insure a festive atmosphere in the audience, backstage, and on stage. Simply kindesses are what makes the difference between a great experience or one leaving you regreting you came.

I think many people sponsoring events leave the consideration of the dancers for last. They are stretched thin and more worried about the sound, the lights, how much money they’re making, etc. then the comfort of the people performing for them. Why do we treat each other this way?
So given my own personal experiences, I submit the following as basic activities to insure a professional experience for the dancers. I hope readers will consider at least a couple of these suggestions while planning their next event.

Pre Event:
Once a dancer replies to a post or flyer regarding an event they should receive a confirmation that they are “on the list” to perform. This basic courtesy is sometimes missed and leads to confusion for dancers showing up at an event believing they are scheduled to perform. Yes, I know of this actually happening.

Dancers should be send a follow up email or letter with other documents for the event. There should be a short note of thank you for participating. There should be directions, performance lineup, information regarding the venue, request for staging information, request for a short bio, maximum performance lengths (troupe and solo). This should arrive at least one week before the event.

Dancers should not have to pay full price to attend an event they are performing in. PERIOD! Even two dollars off is better than nothing.

Day of Event:
There should be someone to welcome dancers with a smile when they arrive (not just take their money and act annoyed). There should be someone to direct the dancers where to change and where the bathrooms are located. Dancers should be provided with a program if there is one.

The host MUST make a point of going in the changing area and saying hello to all the dancers. They should introduce themselves and make them feel welcomed. The host creates a festive atmosphere by setting the example. Many dancers say that they are “shy” when meeting others. The host should help break the ice and/or provide someone to be the point person for questions.

The host should gather the dancers together before the performance and say thank you for coming. While you have their attention, they need to go over the lineup especially if there are changes. This is the time to get the dancers excited about the night. It wouldn’t hurt to treat the dancers humanely by saying: “You’re all going to be wonderful”, “Your costumes look lovely”, “Thank you for coming”, “Have a good time out there”.

Bonus Points Ideas: I’ve seen these little extras go a long way to making the dancers feels as if they’ve been treated well. At a minimum, provide water. If you can, provide the dancers with snacks. Chocolates are an inexpensive nice touch! Give them a small thank you card to commemorate the day. Try to get at least one picture of every dancer to send to them afterwards. If there is a bar, negotiate with the venue one free drink ticket for the dancers (can be non-alcoholic).

During the Event:
Before the show begins, the host should talk to the audience about hafla etiquette. Let them know its okay to make noise during the performance. Show them how.

Cheer the dancers on and encourage the audience to be enthusiastic. Clap, Zagaharet, Hiss, Aiwah, whatever. Never let a dancer hang out to dry in a vacume of crowd silence.

After the Event:
Invite all the dancers back on stage for a bow. Publicly thank them to the crowd.

If there is an open floor dance afterwards, socialize with as many of the dancers as possible. Move about and interact with a number of people. Just because the show is over, you're still the host and a good host insures that everyone is having a good time. Talk to people, even those who didn't do so well and continue to encourage them.

Next day/week after the Event:
Send an email thanking the dancers for participating. Reinforce that you appreciate their attendance.

I'd love to hear any additional suggestions you might have.
